Childhood cancer survivors need a helping hand as they are from underprivileged backgrounds, their parents have spent a lot of money on treatment and most have taken loans which they struggle to pay back. Going back to school is a priority because it gives children a sense of normalcy and it is an important part of their social and academic development. It also gives them hope for a better future.
Sharing with you two stories of the beneficiaries of ICS’s education programme –
Meet Vansh Gupta, an outstanding sportsman and a great dancer even though he has an artificial leg! He lost his leg to bone cancer (Osteogenic Sarcoma) at the age of three. At the Children’s Games held in 2014 in Russia, he got a Gold medal in running and a Bronze for football. He participated in the Games in 2017 and got another medal for football! He has taken part in many dance competitions and won several awards. Vansh is now 14 and studying in 9th class and he is doing excellently in academics at school.
Suraj Yadav is a shy 13-year-old who has a prosthetic eye and stunted growth because of the cancer treatment he received. He was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma (cancer of the eye) when he was just 3 months old. His father is a laborer and the family is facing severe financial constraints. Though he faces multiple obstacles, he is highly motivated and has a positive outlook on life. He is doing well in school and has been promoted to 8 th standard with excellent grades.
Help Vansh, Suraj and other children like them who are doing their best to shine in spite of the odds they are facing in their young lives.
